In my opimion Ilek is right, bosmano is the German Bootsmann (NATO-Code OR 6 (Petty Officer 1. Cl.); it would be a good idea to introduce this rank for Navy Petty Officers.

All Nations use their own ranks. But to compare the ranks the NATO generate a Rank Code System (STANAG 2116).

The German translation for a senior colonel would be Stabsoberst like Stabshauptmann for senior captain (army or air force) or Stabskapitänleutnant for a senior navy lieutenant.

Yes, the Rankinsignia for Generals since 1866, for staff officers since 1832 (nearly the same) and and officers Lt. to Cpt. since 1832 but not from 1866 to 1888.

If you are able to read German, there is a very nice book is "Das deutsche Bundesheer"; uniforms of all German countries in the 19th century. Harenberg Verlag.
