Re: Rank Structures, Selected World War II Belligerents

This brings up some interesting implications Luke. I currently work in a NATO organization, where we have 18 NATO member nations providing personnel. The organization is somewhat ad hoc, though, in that the nations provide whatever numbers and ranks they see fit. So, in some cases we have a US Army ...

Re: eliminating colonel

With all due respect to the good colonel, I'm not so sure that eliminating colonel just to get more (relatively) young guys into the general ranks is a good idea. If the idea was to streamline the rank and pay system--now there he might be making some sence. Smitty, do you have the link to that YouT...

As an example to where else you might see this, on US Army training bases you'll find many foreign officers attending training will wear equivelant US Army rank, i.e. an Ecuadoran Army 1LT pilot trainee wearing Ecuadoran and US Army rank insignia. As mentioned earlier this is just to make it easier ...

I have the pleasure to work with quite a few "old" guys that initially enlisted in the US Army just prior to or during the Vietnam War, when the post-Korea Specialist system was in effect. In talking with them I've come to think the Specialist system has some merit. Generally speaking, the...

I think Mr. Anderson has an interesting take on developing the US Army enlisted rank structure. The system he has developed is somewhat streamlined when one considers the bewildering variety of ranks and insignia the Army had during WWI. The US Army officer rank structure has survived the last 230 p...

For the US Army it's mostly meritorious, with three exceptions: corporal, first sergeant, and Sergeant Major of the Army. Commanders have the option of giving a soldier local appointment orders to corporal without actual promotion orders, effectively making it an "acting" rank. Once the so...

That sounds a little more believable. That's not to say an enlistedman couldn't be an astronaut, but the requirements in terms of experience and advanced schooling automatically disqualifies the vast majority of enlistedmen.

I could have sworn I heard something about an enlistedman from one of the services being accepted into the Astronaut Program. Have you heard anything to that effect?

Interesting update for this discussion--US Army Training and Doctrine Command will soon be dropping all non-BCT/OSUT Drill Sergeants from its books, i.e. no more drill sergeants for soldiers in AIT for Combat Support and Combat Service Support specialties. smilies-20

Well, maroon berets have been in use for quite a few years by paratroopers the world over. But still, a maroon campaign hat? As a side note, the USAF uses several different colors of berets. I can't recall all the types of units that use them but I know the Security Police wear dark blue and parares...

US Army Element, Defense Language Institute

I tried to post this image in an earlier thread, but I can't seem to get it to come up. Here is the shoulder sleeve insignia worn by US Army personnel assigned to the Defense Language Institute.

 I could see how brown, dark blue, or maybe even black would look good on a campaign hat given the proper uniform. But I simply refuse to believe anyone would consider a campaign hat in any shade of red a wise choice. Dave, or anyone, if you can find a picture of said hat I would appreciate th...

It has a broken tablet with something that looks like a Robin Hood hat. I'll look around and see if I come up with it.

Desiging Uniforms and Rank Insignia in electronic media

This is pretty much for anyone-- Over the last couple of years I've developed several rank systems and notional military forces, but I've never been able to really represent them in electronic means. I'm looking to see if anyone has a recommendation for the kind of program I could use to make illust...

Yes and no. In the US Army, at least, rank generally means a certain kind of position, but not always, and certain ranks can be many different positions, as in the rank of Major. As a side note, I'd like to address my favorite rank, corporal. Corporal is still very much alive in the US Army, though ...

:) A First Sergeant can also be addressed as "Top", as in "Top Kick" or "Top Sergeant". A lot of what goes in to the many different titles of rank is history and tradition, as in any military force. The first NCO ranks in the US Army date back to the Continental Army. W...

US Army OPFOR parachute badge

This is a picture of the parachute badge the 1/509th Infantry of the US Army wears when in OPFOR uniform. Of course, one has to be airborne qualified before one can wear this particular badge, and the OPFOR only wears it on the OPFOR uniform. It is not authorized for wear on regular US Army uniforms...

It seems like the Chief wore a device on each collar that just read "CHIEF", much like the "OCS" or "WOC" that candidates wear in the US Army.

Corporal Punishment

Here's something I've wondered about. And excuse me if this has been addressed in another posting. What is the stance on corporal punishment in the various military forces around the world? I know that officially the US Army doesn't allow corporal punishment--that is commencing the beat-down on a so...

Army Drill Sergeants

Something of note about US Army Drill Sergeants is the fact that Infantry Drill Sergeants wear an Infantry Blue disc around the insignia in the front-center of their campaign hats. I say Infantry Blue because I don't know the actual name of the color. It's something of an even greater distinction on...
