Re: La Maison Bleue (AH Republic of Quebec)

I haven't read Hébert's THE MORNING AFTER, which I understand to be the definitive account of what might have happened immediately after a Yes. But it's fertile ground for counterfactuals that surprisingly hasn't been tilled. I'd be interested in your insight into which direction an independent Québ...

Re: US Space Force

The "final" report on space capacity in the U.S. Dep't of Defense has been issued (https://media.defense.gov/2018/Aug/09/2001952764/-1/-1/1/ORGANIZATIONAL-MANAGEMENT-STRUCTURE-DOD-NATIONAL-SECURITY-SPACE-COMPONENTS.PDF). The way I read it, the kernel of the U.S. Space Force will be the new...

Re: World government ranks and insignia

Of course it all depends on your definition of military v. paramilitary. The BSAP in the Bush War certainly had military functions, and had some clearly military formations. Even today the RCMP is (proudly) characterized as a "regiment of dragoons", and was somewhat militarized during WWII...

Re: World government ranks and insignia

Re Constabulary/Gendarmerie: if it has military police duties (like France's Gendarmerie), then military ranks are appropriate (but see below). However, famous English-language gendarmeries (the Royal Irish Constabulary, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the British South African Police) used polic...

Re: US Space Force

The Space Corps discussed last year was contemplated to be spun off from the Air Force, so we could imagine Air Force rank titles and insignia, possibly with an Air Force uniform but in black or midnight blue. The new Space Force (which I'd bet will be slow-walked by the Joint Chiefs) is said to inc...

Re: 1984: Rank Inisignias of Oceania

Fun project, Marc. TBH I don't recall much about the armed forces in 1984 . However, I did see Oceania as a somewhat anglocentric state, even tho' it included what's now the United States. This comes both from its capital's (apparently) being London, from Orwell's natural focus on England, and that ...

Re: US Space Corps

A few thoughts engendered by this fun thread: 1. Would the Space Corps have working uniforms in faux camouflage, like the U.S. Navy? "Blackberries"? ;-) 2. The Cyber Service is a little more intriguing than the Space Corps, because it isn't clear to me which of the existing services it wou...

Rank badges hanging from front of battle dress

Why has it become common for rank to be worn on a kind of hanger from the front of battle dress? Obviously shoulder straps have disappeared - because they got in the way? But why the hanger? Why not a (Velcro'd) patch? And why has it become so widespread relatively quickly?

Re: Greenland military

We're all guessing about a country we don't know, so I'll jump in ... - officers' and other ranks would be probably be very similar to the Danish army and police - heavy use of stars for officer - but instead of the Danish crown, the Greenlandic polar bear! - I couldn't find out Greenland's national...

Re: Turtledove's Southern Victory series

Two things that are not very important: - the first version of the maple-leaf roundel was introduced just after WWII, by 1947 at least (http://www.canmilair.com/schemes.htm; http://www.vintagewings.ca/VintageNews/Stories/tabid/116/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/382/Roundel-Round-Up.aspx) - I'm no...

Re: neo-confederate insignias

Re a hypothetical CSAF - wouldn't it depend on its history? Most air forces were spun out of their countries' armies; hence the near universality of army-type rank titles and badges. The RAF was originally a merger, so it had more or less unique titles and badges. If the CSAF was just the CSA Air Co...

Re: Ill Bethisad: Federated Kingdoms

Like how the lower non-com. ranks in the English army echo the equivalent RN rank badges (fouled anchor for LS, crossed anchors for PO). Still with England, why are 2nd Lieut. and Maj. in white metal rather than brass? Finally I'm pretty sure the general's device should be a cutlass crossed with a b...

Re: Rank badge on chest v. shoulder straps on battle dress

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't asking if rank badges had ever been worn on chests, nor was I asserting that it was dumb. I was asking a question closer to our point in spacetime. :) When and why, recently, have rank badges on American, Canadian, Australian, Pakistani, etc. battle dress moved from ...

Rank badge on chest v. shoulder straps on battle dress

When and why did rank badges start appearing on the chest of battle dress instead of shoulder straps? Did is start with the U.S. forces? Canadian forces have been using it for some years, at least. Thanks! Richard Nelson /in snowy Toronto

Would Catalonia be a republic? The proponents of Scottish independence, for example, make a big point of an independent Scotland's remaining a monarchy.

Re: Equivalent of Five Star General in Other Countries

I'm not sure what's being asked. Lots of countries have 5-star equivalents (e.g., United Kingdom), and even use them fairly often (e.g., Egypt). North Korea may be thought to have a 6-star rank. In most countries they've had an honorary air about them. Britain has had many more field-marshals than t...

Re: Scottish Armed Forces

I concur. The rank insignia of army of the Kingdom of Scotland would look EXACTLY like the British, but with the differences you saw in pre-1968 Canadian and modern Australian and N.Z. uniforms: SCOTLAND shoulder titles, slightly different stars (pips), slight variations in the Crown and related tin...

Re: Tibet Armed Forces

I would guess that a future Tibetan army would adopt or adapt the uniforms and insignia of the pre-1950 Tibetan army. It would depend a lot on who had the greatest influence - definitely not the ROC, probably not the PRC - they'd probably want to look a lot different - so maybe India, which is of Br...

Re: Insignia of an Army of the Republic of Quebec

And the senior officers of a Quebec army would be current CF generals and colonels. They'd be comfortable with an adaptation of the CF ranks. But their political masters may not like it. I like the idea of the SQ ranks. I do think the Quebec generals would want to keep the general's device of the cr...

Re: Rank insignia English name

The United States uses First Lieutenant , but the other English-speaking armies use just Lieutenant . My suggestion is to use the original as a guide: if it has no modifiers, than translate it as Lieutenant . If it has a modifier (e.g., Primero ), then use its translation into English. More broadly ...

Re: I'd like any ideas for a Galactic rank system

Interesting & creative. I think 14 non-commissioned ranks may be more than such a force would need - British-style forces manage with half that. In general for the non-commissioned ranks I might look at RAF-type rank titles, e.g., Spacecraftman, Master Spacecrew. And for general officers, perhap...

Re: Rank Insignia for a Communist USA?

Great question! I note that the DDR had German, not Russian, style rank badges, so an installed regime would quite likely keep the traditional U.S. rank badges - there's nothing particularly un-Communist about them, and the Soviets often let their satellites maintain traditional items. I think a nat...
