Field marshal (sotamarsalkka) Mannerheim was promoted to (or given the title of) Marshal of Finland in 1942. At least during Adolf Hitler's visit on Mannerheim's 75...

While rank structure and insignia layout might be very well based on the British system, what national heraldry would they use for republican Scottish insignia? Lions rampant for higher ranks such as generals? [img]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/48/Lionrampant.svg/392px-Lionra...
That was actually the point as far as RKKA was concerned. They wanted to divorce from the "bourgeois" systems. Their insignia are beyond simple: geometric shapes.
What you need to do is think out of the box. In other words, don't factor in the existing systems, but rather come up with an entirely new one. Already done that. Just the other day I thought of a preliminary system for another faction in my sci-fi 'verse. [img]http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/f/201...
I'd already put some thought to "generic" insignia before, mainly for my sci-fi stuff in the form of mercenary insignia . [img]http://th05.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/f/2012/291/d/3/m09_hot_weather_mercenary_by_t...
Without using backgrounds or embroidery for e.g. shoulder boards, I think the most generic way of making rank insignia is to use the US model for NCOs and enlisted, and modern japanese or german insignia for the officers. Japanese ranks all use sakura flowers (as stars) and straight bars, while germ...
Even though the fir would be an emblem from their potential coat of arms, I don't think it would work as an insigne of rank. Not the whole tree, anyway. I'm not gonna suggest anything silly like using pine cones as insignia, but I think looking at what the finns use would serve as a rather believabl...
The FDF uses prefixes for their lieutenants. in ascending order: aliluutnantti/vänrikki, luutnantti, yliluutnantti . In english: sublieutenant, lieutenant, overlieutenant. Officially they're 2nd Lieutenant, Lieutenant and Sr. Lieutenant. The term 1st lieutenant would carry the nuance of "full L...
I was just watching some WWII-period programming, and I started to think "were the Germans the only ones to wear national insignia on the chest of their uniforms?" So... Were they? As in using a cockade or anything normally used as a cap badge as a pin or badge worn on the breast of the un...
To correct: Ilmatorjunta is Anti-Aircraft. Ilma means air, torjunta means "repulsion, deflection, rejection" We have no separate collar color for airborne forces, just a bordeaux beret with its own pin and the paratroopers' wings on the breast of the uniform. The general staff collar board...
