Re: 2016-09-05

Marc, we have some additional access to the website, but I'm afraid we have no rights to add pictures and renew it. At least I tried to learn how to do this and failed (maybe because I'm a greenhorne as a user)))

Re: Insignia Quiz

Your very first picture resembles French epaulettes. If this a pair, looks like a Chef de Bataillon (Infantry) rank insignia, equivalent to the Major.

Interesting) But I wonder who elaborated these rank insignias - as for me they are far from ergonomic)

Re: neo-confederate insignias

Taking into consideration the sky is being indicated sometimes as a "Fifth Ocean", I would join the opinion of colleagues who support the "navy-like" ranking system for this hypothetical Air Force.

Great job, Marc! A very deep respect) I'm sure both President Davis and General Lee would be happy to implement this system into their armed forces))

Re: The Visitors ("V" 1980s tv show)

This Russian name indeed just reflected the true nature of invaders, and didn't imply "the visitors" category.

Re: The Visitors ("V" 1980s tv show)

Great work, Marc!
And this was one of my most favorite serials) In the Soviet Union this movie was renamed from "V" into "Dinosaurs People" ("Люди-динозавры").

Re: Star Wars Force Awakens First Order

Marc, I wonder if they ever had a rank insignia system for enlisted and NCOs - looks like indeed their military hierarchy (for both Rebels and an Empire) resemble the White Officers' Regiments during the Russian Civil War, as you've mentioned) And taking into consideration the cumbersome and non-erg...

Re: US Space Force

Looks interesting) But again, taking into consideration the so-called, ergonomic aspect: try to limit these insignias with three wings and three arcs as a maximum, and with repeating combination of wings-arcs with an empty field, diamond and a star. Therefore, the system would look as follows: E-1 -...

Re: US Space Force

Well, as I know, the human's eye is capable to tell apart three same shapes "glued together" or four same shapes "placed apart" immediatuly. The fourth shape in the first case and the fifth shape in the second case require a bit more time to identify the number of shapes (the eye...

Re: US Space Force

Marc, I mean they are a bit uncomfortable to indetify the rank immediatuly, one should spend some time to calculate number of arcs etc - by the way, same as for modern USAF enlisted and NCOs rank insignias. But, I repeat once again - this is just my opinion:)

Re: Rank badge on chest v. shoulder straps on battle dress

But I never insisted that the main reason of rejecting from shoulder straps was because they are some kind of an obstacle for the weapon wielding)) Just one of reasons, but not the significant one. I know this from own experience, because when I was in the Soviet Army (many years and pounds ago), my...

Re: Rank badge on chest v. shoulder straps on battle dress

Actually, chest rank insignia were used much earlier, before the WWII - particularly, Republican Army during the Civil War in Spain 1936-1939 used them as well as Legion Condor or Militia Requetes during same period, and some French units used chest rank insignia too. Concerning shoulder straps: the...

Re: My story ranks and uniforms.

Quite an interesting approach, colleagues)) Btw - what do you think about an idea to use a separate civil officials rank system with corresponding titles and rank insignias? Something like in the Russian Empire before 1917. In this case the whole ranking system could be subdivided into two - militar...

Re: My story ranks and uniforms.

Quite an interesting idea. But it looks a bit eclectic - some kind of a mixture of personal and functionary ranks. I suppose it would be worthwhile to subdivide this system into two subcategories: military (paramilitary) with personal ranks and civilian (scientific/technical etc) with functionary. B...

Re: An ensign, three lieutenants, and two captains ...

Well, the Soviet Army and, after the ruining of the Soviet Union, some of former Soviet republics, had and have THREE lieutenant's grades: Junior Lt, Lieutenant and Senior Lt, with only one Captain. This is a historical tradition - Junior Lieutenant was necessary to promote NCOs who had no a special...
