Military Uniform books?

Does anybody know of any good, inexpensive (less then $30) books on military uniforms with color plates like in the Osprey books?

Uniforms

If you can read Romanian (hehe) there are three books that would interest you, uniforms in the Independence War (1877-1878), WWI and an older one, still available in some bookshops, about all uniforms 1830-1945. As dor hungary, they have at he MoD a book in Hungarian about current uniforms, you should maybe write them.

A few things:

1) Is this book on current Hungarian uniforms in english or hungarian?

2) I have found the Russian books Zdzislaw was talking about in a Barnes and Noble (US bookstore chain) in NYC, sadley Barnes and Noble outside of city dont carry the books, but they are availble in US.

Hungarian, unfortunatelly, However, if you write to the Hungarian defense attache in Washington, I'm sure he'll help you out. Btw, the book is called "A hovedelem negy eve 1998-2002" i.e. "Four years of home defense 1998-2002". I suspect, an English version is also available, but I know nothing certain.

If you are able to read German, there is a very nice book is "Das deutsche Bundesheer"; uniforms of all German countries in the 19th century. Harenberg Verlag.

The best place for books of this sort are generally in used/antique book stores. I have found a treasure trove of these especially dealing with UK/Brit EMpire/Commonwealth forces and WW2. Quite alot of stuff. Most of my stuff was found in Canada either in the Ottawa/Kingston region or Calgary. The UK has tons though and as some of the stuff I have especially the WW2 stuff, is of US origin (or US print), you'll find good refs there as well. You just need to invest time. First select a great used book store. It doesn't have to be an antique one but stay away from the paper back only ones. The best are those where there are sooooo many books (especially hard cover or large) on every known topic to humankind that it appears you will have a hard time walking around. The owner will appear (generally) as an unkempt, old sweater wearing, bearded man probably someone lost from Woodstock in 69. Don't be surprised if you need to go near a university area or a part of town where antiques, old stuff are sold (all big cities have tem). Smaller towns do as well especially those with a good toursit trade especially in the Eastern US. Here you'll find great stuff and in the US lots on early US uniforms and ranks. I have seen stuff on France as well. As for Hungary, well I'll go with the previous recs though I have HU from WW2 for sure and possibly earlier.

Very good suggestion Nelsy, another good place is www.abebooks.com an online used/rare/oop books dealer.
