Sparta, Mississippi Police Dept.

This is from the TV show "In The Heat of The Night" about a fictional deep South, small town police dept. The show ran from 1988 - 1995. This is the insignia as I remeber, the reruns are still shown on TV and I watch them alot.

Officer - no insignia
Corporal - same as US Army but in yellow
Sergeant - same as US Army but in yellow
Lieutenant - same as US Army 1st Lieutenant
Captain - Same as US Army
Chief - no insignia that I can tell, except he wears a tan hat rather then grey like the other officers.

It seems like the Chief wore a device on each collar that just read "CHIEF", much like the "OCS" or "WOC" that candidates wear in the US Army.

Hey Chris - Cool Thanks
Did you notice how the department seemed to "add ranks" every season, it started out be what seemed a pretty small force then kept adding people and ranks. Bubba went from Sergeant to Lieutenant to Captain pretty fast.

My interests are any Navy, Marine or Auxiliary Sea Service rank insignia or history.
Slightly anal retentive but at least I have a sense of humour about it
