Mexican Police Project

Hi Chuck,
I saw the BBC TV documentary on this project and it was a real 'eye-opener'.
The Mexico City police officers get around 250 pesos per week and are expected to buy their own uniforms (around 600 pesos). The cops are on 'the bread line' and right through the TV programme freely admitted taking bribes and have no real intention of stopping....they have to feed their familes. When their patrol car breaks down they have to pay for the repairs themselves.!!!!
The Mayor Gulliani appeared for only one day and left the rest of the information gathering to his assistants.
With the Mexico City PD with not enought money to give each of their cops a police radio or install computers (they have none in the whole force!!)..........Gulliani is getting $5 million
One innovation was to work a points system for arrests and give the cops who accumulate the most points bags of groceries to feed their familes!!
In effect, the project was to last 6 months but after nine months the Chief of Police held a press conference and the Gulliani Team were not even invited.............
I would say the $5 milllion could have been spent in a more humane way.
Regards
Alastair
