in term of the books, the only mention I remember of uniforms is in regard to its colours wich are the livery type (main colours of their coat of arms).

In one of the books I remember a mention of atreides troops having a red eagle on their pectoral.

I checked the movie yesterday. The only variant in ranks that I could see were those used by the atreides. all were worn on shoulder boards and had at the top the atreides' eagle.

the rank I could see were:

2 small bands - unamed leader of Dame Jessica' security detail
1 large band - Duncan Idao
1 large band below 2 small - Gurney Aleck

Both the Duke and Paul at the begining wear a eight pointed star over a wide band. later on, Paul wear 2 stars (where the wide band was) and the Duke wear the same over which is a 3rd one. This might be a goof or represent a distinction between their role and leader of a House (first style) and Military commander (second style).

They also have a design on their left breast:

3 triangle (red white red) over a solid gold band - Duncan
3 triangle (white red white) over a solid gold band - Gurney
3 triangle (red white red) over a gold band separate verticaly in 3 (large-short large) - Paul
The Atreides' eagle over 3 red stars. Duke

I couldn't see any variations for the Guild, Harkonnen or Bene Geserith. Both manta wear similar collars which might be part of their uniforms. Doctor Yueh's uniform is completely unlike the ones he serves so this is probably specific to the Suk Doctors.

What appear to be the Emperor's sardaukar commanders all wear 4 stars on their shoulders and

i'll post some images when i get the chance.

Thanks for info, seems to me that NCo's on shoulder boadrs have flag like insignia instead of Eagles as oppouse to officers. I figuered out sort of, officers Lieutenants-Captains 3 thin bands, 1, 2, 3, respectivly to rank. The Major-Colonel, would be one wide band for major, one wide and small for Lt.Colonel, and Gurney would be full Colonel, or one wide and two thin bands, Generals repectivly 1, 2, 3, 8-pointed stars.

NCo's having rank somewhat similar to Russian Imperial, no line, line -- 1,2, 3, respectivly to rank, my speculation though that there at least two more ranks one wide line and one star -- just akin to officers.

There is an out of print book called the Dune Encyclopedia that has some information regarding the structure of the Sardaukar military. It's worth a look if you can find a copy.

Actually I red Battle of Corin. Army of Humanity later Sardukar bear variations of Levenberg, Berseg, Bator, and Bashar. For instance Generals are Bashars -- First, Second, Third and Fourthth grades with one Suprime Bashar.

Dune rank insignias

I can remember from the books rank structure was inconsistent from book to book but there was some guidance to Imperial Sardaukar ranks given in the appendices to Dune.
The officer grades seem to follow our modern field company and field ranks but above Colonel the rank Colonel-Bashar appears, possibly corresponding to the modern Brigadier.
A Colonel-Bashar was also a governor's title and the root of the term might be the Turkish title for a civil leader, Bas or Basar. The term Bashar Of The Corps possibly corresponded to a grade above Brigadier.
Directly above Bashar was the rank of Caid, again corresponding to a Turkish or Arabic term for a civil leader. The Sardaukar rank of Caid seemed to be a political rank rather than a purely military grade. The Sardaukar commanding general was termed Burseg, a purely fictional rank and a term frank Herbert seemed to use for lower grades in the later books. In Children Of Dune the ADC to a Sardaukar Bashar is called a Levenbrech and the next highest rank a Bator. These rank titles could apply to ADC's only.
The Sardaukar Corps was organised into army-sized Legions of 30,000 men, probably commanded by a Burseg. A Legion was said to comprise ten Brigades of 3000 men each so I would guess a Colonel-Bashar commanded a Brigade and higher grade Bashars commanded divisions and corps. In the Dune Encyclopaedia the chief-of-staff of the Sardaukar is called the Hegemon and the Corrino Crown Prince is automatically the Commander-In-Chief, a symbolic rank.
It seems Frank Herbert, in making his future universe a conglomeration of nations of today, drew on diverse titles and ranks stemming from Arabic, German and Greek roots.

Refering to my previous post: If a Captain is the second lowest rank, is that still comparable with a OF2-captain? In other words, has anyone infos how much soldiers (or what kind of unit) a Sardaukar Captain commands?
