Well yeah, since I am just Navy Lieutenant (equal to Army Captain) it's pretty cool to have Lieutenant Commanders gold leaf. At least here :) Seriously, better to make new ones special for RIF members than US military rank insignias. Good luck in creating unique,
Artis
Rather than use established insignia, why not create new ones based on something which is used internationally. I've been looking in this book of old WWII ranks used by every military officaially involved and it seems that just about every nation's Navy uses a system of different sized stripes. Why not come up with something like that?
You have a good idea Cody about the changes in rank insignia you've proposed for the Forum.
I'd LOVE to change from the American insignia to something from another nation. In my neck of the woods, I see American rank insignia literally every day (as well as Canadian and British insignia too!)
They look really nice, job well done CB :P
But on the other hand the idea of using triangels to show rank or positon is quite old and dates back from 1930's when they were used in german concentracion camps. According to the nazi system the black triangel was prescribed for Asoziale So we are all Asoziale here :P

BTW I believe that we have only about 10 users with more than 100 posts, so there is really no need to complicate the system so much.
We shall have to shift those fellows with the bayonet, old boy!
Just my 0.02c - I think one should keep the lifetime of the site in mind when picking the categories. Yes, today there may only be a few users with 100+ posts, but I seriously doubt that that will be the case for long. I myself intend posting a lot more than I do.
Hi Everybody
In fact I didn't care about the forum ranks, but the latest discussion provoked me to add few remarks .....
1. Creating the "rank" based on a number of posts may result in hundreds of post with no actual value - just to get the rank.
I can see some such tendencies on our forum :(
2. Not all posts are equal in value (I mean their informative content). Posting just links to the websites is valuable, but....
- at first one has to check if such a link was alredy posted into the forum (sometimes there are 3 !! posts with the same link)
- they are realy valuable when reffering to the not popular languages of original sites
- in the above case why not create a table of ranks or a table of comparable ranks in certain country and just put these links as reference
- same applies to the posts reporting ranks of many similar organisations like regional police forces in one country. Why not make the table just pointing the differences between certain forces. The colour of stars or chevrons, or chevron's background is not worth creating separate rank chart. Just imagine if one of the European countries would like to add separate posts (pages) for every army branch (differing in piping colour and sometimes names of a rank).
3. If we really need a rank structure on a forum why not add some special ranks which can not be reached without approval of forum moderators. Such ranks could be get for some REALLY valuable posts and will be based of the contributor's real knowledge of the subject. The criteria for such ranks could be defined like the historical analysis of rank in certain country or comparative analysis of similar ranks in various countries and the like...
This is something that I miss on this forum. Maybe it is because I am an engineer and system integrator but I'm loking for any rules also in "rankinsignia" subject. But I found no posts decsribing for ex. why many South (Middle) American insignia are similar to Prussian's, or why the Middle East insignia follow the UK pattern or why the insignia of Confederation States in US Civil War resembles the French ones etc.
Of course I know those answers - but just would like to point to some really valuable subjects ;-)

I'm glad to hear that we finally agree in this

So do I and probably most of the users.

Sound good, but I think our friends from US will not like it ;)
BTW I saw in one of the military related forums (Chinese froum of our forum's friend Mr Frank Soon) the system in which the NCOs have actual insignia from one country , company officers from the other etc
I say (as an American), go "FULL SPEED AHEAD!!!!!", with the changes in the ranks!! The change will do us all a world of good! I support the decision 100 per cent!!!
See ya'!!
Zdsislav, as always has a point. But there is a small problem: who will be responsible for giving a certain rank to a certain contributor and based on what criteria? I mean, everyone should be able to know very clearly from the outset why one will get, say two dozen stars and an other one only a very thin stripe. On the other hand, indeed, giving for mere quantity instead of quality is not exactly a good way to promote substantial and well researched contributions. As to the insignia themselves, I'd suggest some neutral system, entirely made up, and, if possible - though I know it will be hard - one that does not resembel any well-known one.
Visit my city !!!
Guests -- Some kind Warrant's insignia
Members -- Some kind of Company grade officer's insignia
Moderators -- Some kind of Field grade insignia
Admin -- Some kind of General's insignia
I have a conception of a neutral (and very bland) insignia progression, and, to my knowledge, it shows no particular idealogical or nationalistic bias. However, I do not possess the technical expertise to put images of them online.
I did not notice this topic before, this is just what I was thinking about, I fully agree with the change.
I also agree with Zdzislaw with the point of value of posts.
Here I'd like to introduce to you the rank system of our Chinese forum that Zdzislaw mentioned. just for reference.
We use the military rank titles. the lower ranks, EM, NCO, Junior officers depend on quantity of posts. but the higher ranks depend contribution--value of posts, moderators of different sections have the authority to judge and award a post "excellent post", and the logo of the "excellent post" would become red, and you get a "excellent post" record in your profile. Every a certain period, say half a year, every moderator nominates the members with say more than 10 "excellent posts" received in his section to the administrator for promotion, the administrator reviews and verifies the "excellent posts", then issues new rank insignia.
When the next "promotion" time comes, if one had promotion once before, deduct 10 from his total "excellent posts" , if still more than 10, he can be nominated again.
Average members can be promoted up to Maj. Gen. Morderators' ranks vary from Maj. gen. to Gen. Administrators are Marshals.
Similiar method is also used in the awarding of medals in our forum.
We have "excellent posts" medals, "administrative contribution" medals, "long time service" medals ...etc.
Hi all,
A change is good from time to time but I agree that we should go for an internationally recognised structure. At this stage I think that a British system could do well because of the coutries history in colonising. So it is very well recognised by all. The navy structure is also a good idea because most countries with a navy adopt very similar structures, however strip are also very confusing. Nope..... I think the British system would be better.....what do you think?
I have similar concerns. It would be a shame to have a member's entire record erased. A list of the current members and their number of posts should be retained so that everyone does not have to build up from nothing again.
Usually, when rank is expanded, those who were a ceratin rank, may demoted, depends on how many were added. So, for example. Gil Hardin was a Sergeant, and the army decided to add Staff Sergeant and Master sergeant, thus lowering his rank.
Basically, this will let us have a further goal, unlike the previous ranks, which only gave us four promotions by posts, and the others from promotion by staff. I am currently making a system by which we could use bars, chevrons, et cetera.
Al Jumhuriah Al Hind wrote:if these new ranks are adopted, will everyone just start from the lowest rank just like those who just registered here?
Not necessarily, if more ranks are added, the minimum required number of posts for each EM rank can be increased, everybody (except "leaders") gets demoted to Pvt, Pvt. 1st class....etc based on their current total posts. then if quality promotion is adopted, moderators can review the old posts and evaluate them, those who have made "excellent posts" may get promoted to officers right away.
Well, the admins would have a hard time doing that, and the forums would take more time to update. Really and truly, I think that we should just add more ranks and keep everyone at current posts.
This discussion is becoming more and more disparate (not desparate, disparate). If we really want to implement changes, its about time someone made a covalent proposal to be discussed, which would include rank titles, inisgnia, and the exact method by which the ranks would be attained. At the rate this plan has been going, it could be years before anything is accomplished.
I still like the original suggestion of Cody Blackshear as made on page one of this discussion thread. The problem then seemed to be with the black triangle - why not make it Khaki.
As for the attaining system, why dont we change the rank images first (thus showing some initial progress) and then continue the more in depth discussion as long as it takes?
