general and flag officers

since i've heard of gen. and flag officers, i was wondering if the ranks of brig.gen.,maj.gen.,lt.gen.gen.commodore,rar adm.,vice adm.and adm. and general of the army, and admiral of the fleet,and gen. of the air force are also commisioned officers too.does anyone knoe?

Any officer from 2nd Lt. or Ensign all the way up to General of the Army or Admiral of the Fleet are considered Commissioned Officers because they hold a commission from their national command authority. In the United Kingdom, then hold a commission from the Queen while in the United States I believe it comes from the President (although the Senate has to approve high-ranking promotions). This is the difference between Officers and Non-Comissioned Officers (NCOs) who are still considered enlisted personelle. Also, Warrant Officers and not Commissioned Officers, as they do not hold a commisison but a warrant. Even the lowest ranking Commissioned Officer outranks anyone without a commission. here in the US, the commision technically comes from the government, not a person.

part of that whole 'nation of laws, not people' structure we have here. :)

In Greece all officers from the rank of 2nd Lt to the rank of General are Commisioned Officers. The Flag officers (Brigadier, Maj Gen, Lt Gen, Gen) receive their commision from the Goverment with the form of the Government Council of Defence & Foreign Affairs-in Greek KYSEA, under the presidency of our PM & as members the Minister & Delegated Ministers of the Ministry of National Defence & the Ministers & Delegated Ministers of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the presence of the Chief of General Staff & the Chiefs of the Army,Navy & Airforce staffs

ok. by he way valtrex, flag officers are in the navy like rear adm.-adm of the navy(dunno if commodore is a flag officer) brig.gen,maj.gen.lt.gen.gen.-those are gen. officers just to let u know. but what exactly is a COMMISION?

the use of commodore varies from one navy to the next. in many navies, a commodore is more of a title than a rank. going by the US ranking system, any rank of grade O-7 and above is considered a flag officer.

a COMMISION could be defined as permission by the government to command its soldiers.

Sorry my mistake, we don't use this term (flag officers) anyway, we use the terms Subaltern officers (2nd Lt-Cap), Superior officers (Maj-Col), Supreme officers (Brig-Gen)

Here in Switzerland we use

Subaltern officers (Lt - Cap)
Staff officers (Maj - Col)
Higher staff officers (Br - Gen)

In the British Army/Royal Marines:

Company Officers (2Lt-Capt) (Subalterns officially refers to all three ranks, but in practice is never used for captains)
Field Officers (Maj-Brig)
General Officers (Maj Gen-FM)

In the Royal Navy:

Junior Officers (SLt-Lt)
Senior Officers (Lt Cdr-Cdre)
Flag Officers (RAdm-Adm of the Flt)

In the Royal Air Force:

Junior Officers (Pilot Off-Flt Lt)
Senior Officers (Sqn Ldr-Gp Capt)
Air Officers (Air Cdre-MRAF)
