Help Wanted: Graphic Artist

I have conceived of a set of space naval insignia for a fictitious nation known as the 198th Interplanetary People's Republic, a government that has undergone 198 revolutions and three civil wars. I have drawn the insignia by hand in a notebook but as I have little artistic ability and I lack the skills and equipment to illustrate them on the computer, I would like to request that someone make a nice electronic image for me. I'm afraid that I don't have access to a scanner, so I'll only be able to describe the insignia. I also don't know how I'd be able to compensate anyone for this, as I'm not really willing to award any monetary dispensations, so I guess it would be a pseudocharitable service.

It looks like J.T. Broderick has already started, and I don't want to take up anyone else's time. But if you're still interested, I can send a few descriptions anyway.

J.T.BRODERICK is a fine graphic artist and his website showing the insignia of the early United States Navy is really outstanding, you have chosen well with Broderick on board. Respectfully yours, Sarge Booker :)

Well, most of us are either military enthusiasts, artists, et cetera. I fall among manyof this groups, and would be willing to send you a sample, but Mr. Broderick is among the best.

J.T. Broderick is the best of the best, no one else comes close. Speaking of samples, its funny that even though an artist is well-established and their work is reknown, people ask for samples, perhaps what they really want is the artwork for themselves? Knowing an artist like J.T. Broderick is in much demand, one would rightly assume they have little time to spare and might have orders backed up they cannot fill in the meantime? Not sure how good of an artist other enthusiasts are though? There is music I like, but I could never perform and play it myself. I believe if you want them to p[rovide a sample, offer to pay postage and provide them with an envelope suitable to mail it back to you as postage just for a domestic letter in the U.S. is 37-cents, Lord knows what the poor Brits must pay for Royal Mail service plus they pay V.A.T. as well.

Hello all,

First of all, Hello Sarge! I well remember corresponding with you when I first put up my crude USN insignia site six years ago and you were quite helpful as always. I lost almost everything on that old computer when the hard drive went, including the e-mail addresses of the many people who had written me, so it is very good to hear from you.

In the intervening five years I've got a new wife and son and a house that we have completely remodeled. So, while I have very much wanted to put out an improved version of that old site, I haven't had time. (For some reason known only to them, my old ISP has kept that site up even though I haven't done business with them for over five years).

Thanks for the kind words from Sarge and Cody, though I have to say they are undeserved! There are plenty of graphic illustrators that are much better than me! The illustrators for Pavel's site are excellent. Erskine does some impressive work, great for detail. I tend to work smaller images for insignia, because I like people to be able to see a bunch of insignia at once and see how they relate to each other. But that's just a personal preference.

And I am far from being a professional illustrator! I am a manager in a government department, which has about zero to do with graphic design! Though I am a fair hand with pen, ink, and brush, I took up computer graphics solely to illustrate stuff I was interested in and put it online.

Anyway, I am very close to putting up a new site with pages of USN insignia and uniforms (among other naval history subjects). I gave a preview of the insignia illustrations in other posts on this forum. The uniform graphics look like this:

Enough from me, now!

Thanks and best regards,
Justin

JUSTIN: Nice "Cracker Jack" of a silor suit! Outstanding! Just, had my old McIntosh die 3 or 4 times and them my Hewlett Packard died and lost everything each time, know the feeling, Justin! CWO-4 Lester B. Tucker sent me lots of drawings and research on the cuffs and collars of the United States Navy from earliest to present, maybe you can recreate sailor suits and make him proud and it would help the rest of us to see it finally where we can all see it, Justin? Also, I have almost 1,000 images of specialty marks, Qualification marks, rates, etc., still unpublished, perhaps I can send you these and you can add about 167 known specialty marks of the U.S. Navy alone as well as the Revenue Cutter Service, Coats Guard, Coast & Geodetic Survey, Public Health Service, Harborboat, Light House Service, and Martime Service, Justin? I have pictures of all of these stored away. John C. Helvey and John A. Stacey also provided a lot of material. My email address uses the same name as my screen name "at" military.com (hhbooker2) Sarge Booker :)

Please excuse my tardiness, but here they are. The IPR insignia as drawn by J.T. Broderick. An excellent job, as far as I'm concerned, and a big hand for taking the time to put in thirty-nine little stars on the emblem.
