U.S. Military Enlisted Promotions
E-2 to E-4 With the exception of the Navy for the rank of
E-4, promotions to the lower grades are pretty much automatic, assuming individuals perform their duties adequately.
Below are the average years of service required for promotions:
U.S.Marine Corps
E-2 6 months active duty
E-3 9 months active duty, 8 months as an E-2
E-4 24 months active duty, 12 months as an E-3, and meet established score
U.S.Army
E-2 6 months active duty and commander's recommendation
E-3 12 months active duty, 4 months as an E-2, and commander's recommendation
E-4 12 months active duty, 6 months as an E-3, and commander's recommendation
U.S.Navy
E-2 9 months active duty and commander's approval
E-3 9 months as an E-2, demonstrated military and professional qualifications, and commander's approval
E-4 Based on Navy-wide vacancies within each career field. Averages 36 months active duty.
U.S.Air Force
E-2 6 months active duty and commander's approval
E-3 10 Months as an E-2, and commander's approval
E-4 36 months active duty, with 20 months as an E-3
E-5 to E-9 Promotions to these grades depend upon several factors, including vacancies, qualifications, schools attended, promotion points awarded, etc., are competitive, and are based on specific vacancies within MOS's (jobs).

E-5 4-5 years
E-6 8-12 years
E-7 13-16 years
E-8 17-19 years
E-9 20-22 years
U.S. Military Commissioned Officer Promotions
The legal basis for commissioned officer promotions is contained in Title 10, United States Code.Commissioned officers are recommended for promotion by their commanders, and are selected by centralize (service-wide) promotion boards, who make promotion determinations based upon the officers' promotion records.
Below are the average years of service required for promotions:
O-2 18 months
O-3 4 years
O-4 10 years
O-5 16 years
O-6 22 years
U.S. Military General Officer Promotions
General officers are nominated for promotion by the President of the United States, and confirmed by the Senate.To be promoted to O-7, an officer must first complete a full tour in a Joint-Duty-Assignment (this is an assignment to a unit that is comprised of members from two or more of the services).
