Here are the rank insignia for the San Carlos City Police Department from my story, California Blue. The department consists of 25 officers, including the Chief, Assistant Chief and six uniformed Detectives who act as regular patrol officers when not working cases.

Here's the rank insignia of Torres City (California) Department of Public Safety. The DPS consists of ten police officers and ninety-five firefighters, including the Director of Public Safety, who acts as both Chief of Police and Fire Chief, and is assisted by one Deputy Police Chief and one Deputy Fire Chief. All the police officers are trained as auxiliary firefighters and all the firefighters are trained as reserve police officers.

Highest ranking elected law enforcement official in the county. Does the will of the people who elected him/her. Sets policies, establishes overall procedures, etc.

Responsible for the actual physical implementation of the policies and procedures established by the Sheriff.

In charge of a particular division. For example: "Patrol Division", "Detective & Investigative Services Division", "SWAT Division", etc.

In charge of a particular geographical area of a division. For example: "Patrol Division, central district".

Mentors and guides deputies & recruit deputies.

Someone having less than one year field experience (or less than 300 hours of service for reserve deputies) -- does not work alone and needs to be partnered with a senior deputy.
