I found this Powerpoint Presentation on the new rank structure/ responsibilities in the Polish Army on the Web.

Unfortunately my Polish is not very good. Can someone translate the meanings of:

Stanowiska Sztabowe
Pomocnik Dowodcy ds. Podoficerow
Szczebel Kompanii
d-ca druzyny
szef pododdzialu

I think the new structure for NCOs is as follows (slide 9 in the Powerpoint Presentation):

Plutonowy/ Sierzant (NATO: OR5/OR6) - second in command of a platoon
Starszy Sierzant (OR7) - Senior NCO in a Company
Mlodzny Chorazy (OR8) - Senior WO in a Battalion
Chorazy (OR8) - Senior WO in a (Polish: Pulk??)
Starszy Chorazy (OR8) - Senior WO in a Brigade or Division
Starszy Chorazy Sztabowy (OR9) - Senior WO in a corps or for the Polish Army

Grateful for help with the translation and interested to hear people's views. The roles of the four Warrant Officer (Chorazy) ranks appear to be those of a Command Sergeant Major in the US Army or a WO1 Regimental Sergeant Major in the British Army.

pulk is regiment, for sure
szef pododzialu - head of under-section or under-bureau, or some other, basic organizational unit within a ministry or staff
pomocnik - aid, deputy, assistant

The warrant officers of the Polish army are not identical to the
American and English.
This "Chorazy`s" is service ranks between officer and NCO.Historically seen they come from the Russian army.Since Poland stood many decades under Russian rule, independent Poland took over most ranks.
Originally there were only one "Chorazy" equal the one officer candidate was.It was later its own rank and it more designations was created.In the today's Polish army they have functions like low officers.Also special services are implemented by them.At the German-Polish border (where I work), they are used as a service
group leader, dog leader, troop leader or also for single functions.Single functions are here interpreter, transferral civil servant for illegal immigrants, motorists for high officers...

More precisely the rank structure of Poland derived from both Russian and Austro-Hungarian army, with the latter prevailing I think. Also the rank of chorąży derived from the Austro-Hungarian army rather than the Russian army, being actually an alloy of two ranks: Offiziersstrllvertreter and Fähnrich. Unlike in the Russian army, the rank could be granted to long-serving ncos too.

It does appear from the Powerpoint document however that at least some "Chorazy" are being trained to carry out the role of the British Warrant Officer (i.e. Sergeant Major) in line with the current NATO doctrine of former Soviet Armies developing a stronger NCO corps.

Word "chorąży" is taken from middle-ages history of polish military. It was a man who was carrying the unit, prince or land colors - the ensign. So, ensign in polish is "chorągiew", a man who is carrying "chorągiew" is "chorąży".

Of course now the rank is different then in middle-ages. People carrying the rank of "chorąży" very often were high qualified technicians.


And squad it is not a platoon. Squad is sub-platoon unit. Few squads is a platoon, few platoons is a company.
