hello,
does anyone know what tegmen in the Turkish language actuly means.
I know that it means " lieutenant ".
( Astegmen ,tegmen, ustegmen = first lieutenent ,second , third or ensign )
But what does it mean etymological ?
Because for instance in the Turkish language :
" binbasi " ( major) means actualy : lord of 1000 men
or yuzbasi ( captain ) means : lord of 100 men .
I have looked in many dictionaries both online and in libraries.
But i just couldn't find it....
So where does the word " tegmen " come from ?Thanks in advance.

Tegmen comes from Segmen which mean something like militia.
Also it may come from Degmen which means a traditionaly dressed up man seated on a horse and wearing weapons , for a traditional feast.
So it seems to be more or less the same as Segmen. smilies-05
