Hi, I'm new here. This isn't really hypothetical but I wanted to post some info after seeing a post about a Communist USA and questions about insignia if Texas separated and such. The Republic of Texas already had a system of ranks which can be found here:

I know it's wikipedia but I have seen this same rank system elsewhere and I thought the idea of using the arrows, the weapon of the Texians dreaded enemy Comanches, for field grade officers was just genius on their part. Bravo to them for not just following the US Army pattern directly.
