Fictional Police Forces

I've been re-watching Omerta, an early 1990s cop show that was popular in Quebec. It tells the story of the members of the fictional Sureté Nationale's Organised Crime Unit as they try to take down Montreal's mafia godfather, Giusepe Scarfo.

I've noticed 2 stand-in organisations so far. The first is the Sureté Nationale, a clear stand-in for the Sureté du Québec. The main characters are detective so they operate in civilian attire but a few uniform personnel can be seen. They wear the same basic SQ uniform (brownish). Their shoulder patch is an overly simplified version of the SQ which turns out to be closer to the livery used on SQ cars. Since none of them having speaking role, no one bothered to give them rank insignias.

The second is the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal. While this is the current name of the police force, at the time of the series, the police force was called the Service de Police de la Communauté Urbaine de Montréal. Like the Sureté Nationale, the policemen wear the same uniform as their real world counterparts. Their badges are even closer to the real ones though a tad simplified.

below are the fictional and real world counterpart for comparison sake.

Re: Fictional Police Forces

Thanks Marc, those are really nice. I had not heard of that show.

However, here is the ranks for the fictional Los Santos Police Department from the 2013 game Grand Theft Auto V.

They are based very closely on the Los Angeles Police Department.

Re: Fictional Police Forces

Not just based closely, but they are exactly like the LAPD and LASD insignia and rank titles. They even have the new LASD master field training officer stripes, which have only been around a couple of years.
