My story ranks and uniforms.

I was going to wait until I set up my new account to post this, but I might as well do this now :P

So I have begun writing my own story, basic background is, apocalypse, virus changes humans into animal like creatures, destroys the sentient being, becomes a ravaging living corpse which set to bite and thus infect other humans (the virus is an evolved form of rabies).

Anyway, this story takes place 7 years after the outbreak, and we have a new international organisation named the New Commonwealth, a collection of surviving, or somewhat surviving, nations who are researching ways to rid the world of these creatures. It is mainly a technocratic society for the time being :P

So what does this new organisation have? A task force. And what does this Task Force have? Uniforms, yay.
So here are some uniforms and rank insignias of the New Commonwealth task force:

(LtR) Enlisted grades, senior NCOs, junior officers, commanders and the Directors.
I tried to make these service/general dress uniforms as simple as possible.

And here are the ranks:

I decided not to use so many standard military and police ranks and make them more modernish.

Yes, everything is drawn in MS paint, because 1) I like MS paint and, 2) I am on NationStates alot :P

I just made these when I was working through my first chapter. The uniforms and ranks won;t me mentioned much in my story, I just wanted to see what this scientific military organisation would look like.

Anyway, please let me know what you think.

Re: My story ranks and uniforms.

Nice idea! Yet I think that there are way to many ranks for a "scientific military organization".

One would think that a minimum entry requirement would be a B.Sc.; hence a commissioned first rank. Cf. NOAA Corps and USPHS.

If the scientists need any assistants, they might make up one or two ranks. No need for a full NCO corps.

Btw, if the Task Force is truly scientific, the B.Sc.'s are the assistants.

Re: My story ranks and uniforms.

Quite an interesting idea.

But it looks a bit eclectic - some kind of a mixture of personal and functionary ranks.

I suppose it would be worthwhile to subdivide this system into two subcategories: military (paramilitary) with personal ranks and civilian (scientific/technical etc) with functionary. But all this is just imho))

Re: My story ranks and uniforms.

Dorward has basically cleared up your point for me, Luke2.

The Task Force is the main 'paramilitary' (for lack of a better term) which are subdivided within themselves, security units (police) and deployment units (military).
When I say 'scientific military organisation' I mean it is a military controlled by scientists rather than politicians, since these facilities started in the early 2000s privately by scientists researchers etc. they organised the entire New Commonwealth when the outbreak began, including the task force, who's sole duty is to fight the infected, save the survivors and protect the facilities.

Remember, this is a multi-national organisation, and each rank holds a specific position. Plus, there is only ever one vice to one full officer.
Captains have one Vice-Captain, Commanders have one Vice-Commander and Directors have one Vice-Director.

Cadet Officers are appointed within the cadet training teams.

Sub-Officers are awaiting Vice-Captains. This is a NATO OF-D rank. Each one may have a different role depending on the branch.

Captains command a Unit (between platoon and company size)

Commanders are in charge of a number of Units.
In this story so far, Commander Theodore Richard Blake is in command of all Alpha Units in the American-Canadian Facility located on the East Coast.

Senior Commanders command specific Task Force branches (security units, deployment units, pilot units etc)

Administrators over see the Task Force Units within each facility.

Directors are in charge of Task Force units within a sector or region, which may hold a number of facilities.

Senior Directors will be the main Commanders of a (surviving) nation's Task Force.
There will also be 3 Director-Generals as the overall commanders of the New Commonwealth Task Force (still unsure if there should be 1 or 3. I may stick with 3 to make it more of a council).

As for the NCOs:

Private (which I may change to operator) is the standard enlisted troop.

Cadet leaders are like cadet officers, they are appointed from within the recruit teams, and once training has been completed each cadet leader may be promoted immediately to either Team Leader or Section Leader.

Team Leaders are, exactly as they say, team leaders, fire team leader lets say, and deputies to the Section Leaders, who command a section.

Sergeants are a Captain's NCO aide in a Unit, like a platoon or company sergeant.

Senior Sergeants would be the NCO aide to a Commander (I might remove this rank though).

As for the Operational Assistants and Operational Advisers, these have versatile roles from quartermasters, technical experts, trainers, and advisers of Task Force members.

And as Doarward said, you have a separate civilian organisation, which is different to the Task Force.
While the Scientist, engineers and technicians are in charge (thus the technocratic society), there are a range of different departments within a New Commonwealth facility, including the Task Force, agriculture producers, medical professions, administrators, engineers/technicians, researchers, various scientific departments, etc.

Just to clarify, the Task force is only a deployment and protection detail, ensuring the safety of the people in the New Commonwealth facilities, outposts and some settlements as well as being deployed to fight the infected and search for survivors.

The Scientists are the main leaders, so to speak, over the New Commonwealth with a number of different departments to assist with the developing new society.
The Secretary-General will be the leader of the New Commonwealth, but mostly act as an arbitrator.

But anyway, this was just an idea, it isn't really the main focus, I was just bored smilies-08

The Hypothetical Space Force Ranks are indeed interesting, especially the NASA inspired ones, I may take a further look into that.

The other link, I remember that, when I was planning my first Empire, which was revised completely with Medic's brilliant assistance and superior art skills.

Re: My story ranks and uniforms.

Okay, so I improved the ranks and altered the titles:

I decided to use a slightly altered version of the NATO star for COIR (Coalition of Organised International Response.

When I made these originally I thought have the stars on the outside would look good, but when I made these new ranks, they looked rather messy, and the Commander/Administrators ranks needed to flow with the rest.
I took the idea of stars in the Wreath from the UNSC from Halo, so a bar could be placed under the mid-officer ranks. This meant altering the Director ranks as well, for this, a simple large star provided the solution.

I have an alternate version for the mid ranks at the bottom, but I think this system flows better for a technocratic apocalyptic military organisation.

Oh, I also decided to replace Private with a rank I made up, Enlistor.
Again, Sergeant, Captain and Commander are the only generic military ranks on there.

Very nice work.
I had planned out a story of my own, similar to yours and had planned to post it. The reason I mention it is because I based my paramilitary force on the North-West Mounted Police and its successors. In researching them, I ran into some phrases I co-opted; 'engagement' and 'engaged,' both of which were substituted for 'enlistment' and 'enlisted.' I think 'engager' would be a better fit than 'enlistor' It also has a more ... aggressive tone to it, and would fit a task force that's there to protect people, facilities, and the like.
Just my $.02.

Thank you, although the epaulette and the wreath were made by Kour, the rest was just piecing it together.
Engager? Hmm, I will think about it, still not sure yet.
My story may be different from yours anyway, mine mostly focuses on a person, going through emotional horrors, educed by a human experiment while searching for someone he love dearly.

I may redraw my uniforms at some point as well.

Re: My story ranks and uniforms.

Quite an interesting approach, colleagues))

Btw - what do you think about an idea to use a separate civil officials rank system with corresponding titles and rank insignias? Something like in the Russian Empire before 1917. In this case the whole ranking system could be subdivided into two - military (paramilitary) and civil (scientists/technicians etc).

Ah brilliant, I was looking for some civilian ranks for my other project (my empire for Nationstates).
But this may be useful for civilian ranks, although I am not sure if they will wear uniforms.

Perhaps the Administration Branch may have uniforms, but I doubt they will have as many as the Task Force.
So far, the two civilian ranks I have in mind are the Administrator-General, the leader of each individual facility, and the Secretary-General, the leader of the COIR.

There will be different levels of secretary and other administrators, since the Administrator is similar to a government minister in a singular facility and it's surrounding outposts and settlements.

Re: My story ranks and uniforms.

I decided to update the ranks, since some were a bit out of place.

I renamed all the senior NCO ranks to Specialist, but still maintain their original designated positions.
Removing Technician from the list was necessary, since Dorward pointed out Technicians themselves would be civilians. Also taking SFMRAS, I renamed Enlistor to Engager, and it does flow far better.

Just to point out, a Specialist Officer still maintains the NATO grade OF-D, but acts like a US Warrant Officer combined with the former Japanese Warrant Officer. It is a position for both senior Specialists who have more access to information, but it is for passed Officer Cadets who were not selected for Vice-Captaincy.

I also took the liberty to remover the central dark silver cross, it looked rather untidy.

Anyway, here are the improved Task Force ranks (Captain and Commander are now the only original military ranks):

Re: My story ranks and uniforms.

Yet again, I got busy messing around with my ranks, so I would like your opinions.

Say the image above this post is version one, and this is version 2:

Which one is better?

I personally think this one, it flows better, and the laurel wreath symbolising academic achievements would make the Task Force ranks more in tune with the overall scientific feel of this international organisation.

I agree that this chart flows better. It also allows you to use the stars and/or bars without the wreath to signify any other ranks or positions that may arise when writing your story.

I was thinking about your removal of the cross, and I've had an idea. The star with cross could be a branch badge, a length of service mark, an 'overseas' mark, or the Task Force's symbol, Like a US cop's badge of the Starfleet delta from Star Trek.

PS Glad that my suggestion worked out. I'm honored. smilies-05 And yes, my story is quite different than yours. And not just because I've had it set on another planet. I'll probably start a thread on it.
Good luck on your story, I know it can be rather difficult and frustrating at times to actually write it out.

Re: My story ranks and uniforms.

Here is a better version of the uniforms.

These may appear rather dark to some screens.

NCOS left, Officers Right.
I will add the name tags and branch disk later.

Re: My story ranks and uniforms.

Altered the Engager Ranks slightly:

Engagers will still be called 'Team Leader' and Section Leader' within units, but not the Engager rank can be interchangeable with other divisions of COIR (Technician, Lead Technician, Senior Technician; Engineer, Lead Engineer, Senior Engineer etc).

Full titles of Specialist ranks will be Specialist Engager, Senior Specialist Engager and Chief Specialist Engager, but they will mainly be called Specialist. This will also be interchangeable with the other division ranks (e.g. Senior Specialist Technician).

Return to “FICTIVE RANK INSIGNIA”
